James A. Underwood, Jr. M.D.
James A. Underwood, Jr., a Jackson native, joined GI Associates in 2001 and is a gastroenterologist at the Jackson GI Associates and Endoscopy Center and Madison GI Associates and Endoscopy Center.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of the Arts in Biological Sciences from the University of Mississippi. He stayed there to complete his Doctor of Medicine where he graduated Magna Cum Laude again. He did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He came back to the University of Mississippi as Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor in Internal Medicine, then went on to complete his fellowship in Gastroenterology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. He is board certified in Gastroenterology.
In addition to working at GI Associates, Dr. Underwood is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi. He has numerous memberships including being a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a member of the Mississippi State Medical Association and the American Gastroenterological Association.
